Artist Brief for mural project

Bridport Town Hall Heritage and Conservation Project

1. Background

Bridport Town Council has received approval from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a substantial capital project focussing on Bridport Town Hall and is looking for an artist to work with local schools to produce a series of murals for the temporary hoardings that will surround the building from October 2010 to November 2011.

The overall project will renovate and restore the building, conserve the heritage and develop a series of interpretative and educational materials and activities.  It will preserve and enhance the building for the future and through improved physical, intellectual, social and virtual access, increase usage and develop a greater sense of civic pride and understanding of the Town’s cultural, social and industrial heritage.

The project will enable universal access to the building and its heritage.  The project will open up the building onto the central meeting area of the Town, making it far more inviting and accessible so positioning it at the heart of the community.  It will also enable the development of a flexible, centrally located display and exhibition space for use by community groups.

The project is primarily funded by Bridport Town Council, Heritage Lottery Fund, West Dorset District Council and Dorset County Council.

2. Artist led project – Murals for hoardings
While the capital work is underway the area will be screened from the public by hoarding boards.  These boards provide an opportunity to inform the general public about the work.  Artist led mural workshops will enhance the appearance of this town centre screening and offer opportunities for community engagement in the project.
The Town Council already has a good relationship with a number of local schools who have previously been involved in artist led activities.  The workshops to create the murals will be accompanied by behind the scenes tours of the work in progress and talks led by the Activities Coordinator.  Teachers will be encouraged to develop ideas, themes and design suggestions for the murals in school, which will be given to the artist to work into the final design.
The Activities Coordinator will be responsible for engaging and coordinating schools’ involvement and project management, leaving the artist free to run the workshops.
The murals need to be produced on high quality ply board that can be attached to the hoarding structure.  The medium applied to the board must be weather proof and durable to ensure a life of 18 months.  In selection of materials due consideration must also be given to health and safety both during the workshops and once the murals are on public display.

Timetable
The workshops will be scheduled for September 2010.  Number of workshop sessions and exact dates to be agreed with the appointed artist and participating schools.  Work needs to be completed and ready for installation by the end of September 2010. Bridport Town Council will be responsible for the installation of the murals.

Fee
£1050 inclusive of travel, expenses and materials*
*Ply board will be supplied, materials costs over and above this must be covered within the fee above.

Terms and Conditions

The project must be completed within the specified fixed fee and timetable.

Payment will be made on receipt of official invoice.  Terms of payment to be agreed on appointment.
